Anne Barmettler, MD, is Director of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Barmettler is a board certified ophthalmologist with a clinical specialty of oculoplastic surgery, which involves plastic and reconstructive surgery of the upper face, eyelids, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and lacrimal (tear) system.After earning her Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at Bowdoin College in 2003, Dr. Barmettler pursued her Doctor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College, earning the degree in 2008. Her postdoctoral training began with a yearlong internship at Crozer Chester Medical Center, which she completed in 2009 before beginning a three-year residency in ophthalmology at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical College. She then undertook a competitive two-year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstruction surgery from 2012 to 2014, training at William Beaumont Hospital, Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University and Consultants in Ophthalmic Facial Plastic Surgery. She is one of only 800 surgeons that are a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), passing both written and oral exams, as well as a peer-reviewed thesis on spacer graft in lower eyelid retraction surgery. This research was recognized by the official national ophthalmology society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, being awarded “Best of ASOPRS” in 2017.Dr. Barmettler’s research builds on her clinical interests in the treatment of conditions of the eyelid, orbit and lacrimal system. She has over 50 peer reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and review articles. She is routinely invited to give lectures and presentations at national and international meetings. She is also an Editor for the American Academy of Ophthalmology website, Eyewiki, and a peer reviewer for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Orbit, BMJ Open, American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports, and Clinical Ophthalmology.Dr Barmettler is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Asian Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, New York Ophthalmological Society, and the North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons.View Dr. Barmettler's CV
