Dr. Anthony Urbanek, MD

I had suffered debilitating TMJ pain in my upper lip and ear for several years. I also still had my wisdom teeth at 40. I found Dr. Urbanek during an online search and I was so happy to find he was right here in middle Tennessee. His split has resolved all of my pain and now I only wear it at night. He also removed all four of my wisdom teeth, a procedure other surgeons told me not to do. My recovery was fast and I'm feeling back to normal within a week after the surgery. When I first visited Dr. Urbanek, I had symptoms from TMJ going back 20+ years including frequent headaches, ringing in my ears, jaw locking, jaw pain/soreness, some vertigo and numbness in my fingers and toes. Within 2 weeks of my receiving the splint, the headaches and jaw pain decreased significantly. It has now been over 2 months and I can say that my symptoms are almost entirely gone (85% or so). I have been wearing a splint for 3 weeks. I need to say honestly that the pain in my jaw is gone, the ring in my ears no longer exist, I am not dizzy anymore due to vertigo, and the headaches I suffered are completely gone. I understand some of these problems may return briefly but also confident that they will disappear within the next 6 weeks. I have had TMJ pain off and on for several years. Went through night guards due to my grinding at night. Every time I went to my ENT with an earache, 99% of the time, it was due to TMJ pain. when I first visited I was having constant tension in my jaw, ear pain, and headache. For 20 years I have know that I grind my teeth at night, but this winter my symptoms got so much worse. I talked to my dentist and got a night guard and my PCP gave me muscle relaxants. When these didn't help and my life was interrupted by pain and dizziness on a daily basis, they BOTH referred me to Dr. Urbanek. I came into Dr Urbanek's office at the recommendation of my ENT after I mentioned constant ear pain that had gotten so bad that I found myself on antibiotics a couple months in a row. The pain even went into my jaw and kept me up at night as I struggled to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in. I visited Dr. Urbanek because I had flare-ups a few months prior with pain in my jaw. The pain had been so bad I could barely open my mouth. After taking predisone pack and ibuprofen it got better. After meeting with Dr. Urbanek, he had me where a splint that they custom fitted for my mouth. I had to wear the device 24/7 for 3 weeks. I began to notice my bite was better and after the 3 weeks I was about 85%. I then started wearing the device at night and am close to restoring my bite again.

So I developed TMJ in my Senior year of college, mainly due to an incredible amount of stress, which in turn made me clench my jaw consistently at night and some during the day. I would have painful headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, some dizziness, and would just feel awful the majority of my days. Since wearing this splint, I have much less pain and headaches, and my dentist said it is also helping my gums not to recede as much as before I began wearing the splint. My story started actually about 20 yrs ago when my son was about 2 he raised his head on my chin and knocked my bite off. I then went to a dentist and was give a mouth guard which I wore for about 2 wks and I thought the problem was solved. But not the case. About 2 years ago I begin to have shooting pain up in my jaw, which was very odd feeling to me. It was so different from anything I had experienced before. I went to my dentist which stated she did not have a clue what it could be because my teeth and gums were fine from xrays. I then went to a endodontist which gave me a root canal on one of my back teeth that I had a crown already on This was very upsetting when on the way home, still deadened had the same pain that I had before I went. It was very hard to talk I was iin so much pain. I went to get my hair cut, and my hair dresser told me I had TMJ, she had it, and it was the same simptoms. She told me to go to walgreens and get a TMJ mouthpiece and it would help. Which I did, it helped a little, but the pain would come back even work after a while. After about 5 or six mouth pieces I had the idea that I should go to the dentist in my hometown, Fairview Tn which I had ask to do a mold for me to try because I had bought several mouth pieces and maybe one that would fit my mouth would work better. He then recommended Dr Urbanek, and said he was a TMJ specialist. I thought what the heck, it is worth the try. My life has never been the same since I went to his office for a visit. I couldn't believe how knowledgeable Dr. Urbanek was in diagnosing and treating my pain. I wasn't even aware that some of my symptoms were related to my TMJ. For the longest time, I would wake up every morning with a headache. I never thought anything about it until other symptoms started. I even foolishly ignored those until I ended up in a walk in clinic for a "double ear infection". After that visit I was referred to a family doctor and then to an ENT. Hi, I am a Scuba Instructor in Kauai and I was having major issues with serious pain in my ears and jaw while I was diving and it was taking the fun out of diving. I was originally told to go and see an ENT and then they told me it was TMJ so that's how I found Dr. Urbanek. I was having major pain behind and under my ears. I would also retain a lot of fluid behind my eardrum which would cause me equalization problems and a lot of ear infections. The entire right side of my face and down my neck would swell after I would go diving and would last a few days. I wasn't able to do my job anymore due to the pain. I was having vertigo issues under water and I would also have major issues with lock jaw to the point I was on a soup and noodle diet because I could barely open my mouth to fit anything in. I was having so much pain with my TMJ that i consulted my dentist with needing a new mouth appliance . He recommended me to a Dr. Urbanek . He ask me all these questions & of course i had all the symptoms . It started about 35 years . I got hit in the jaw with a softball . I got married right before i turned 20 so it was in the first years of marriage that my jaws started locking when i would yawn . I got my first mouth piece & wore it day and night for about a year . I had it for about 3 or 4 years until i wore holes in it. I finally got another one . Had to keep getting it fixed . Finally it just didn't fit right anymore . I went with out one for so long that i didn't realize it was harming me more and more everyday. Headaches all the time, neck & shoulder pain . I first was told I had TMJ when I went to the doctor thinking I had an ear infection. It felt like a very severe ear infection deep down in my ear. My doctor took a look in my ear and told me that nothing was wrong. A few months later, I returned with the same symptoms. Again, she looked in my ear and said that nothing was wrong. Then she suggested that I may have TMJ. I spoke to my dentist about it. My dentist looked at my x-ray, and suggested that the problem was probably my wisdom teeth. I got my wisdom teeth removed and found that afterwards the pain in my jaw did not stop and was amplified. I told my dentist about it again, and he sent me here. I came in, and answered his questions and was diagnosed with TMJ. There would be weeks and even months where I could not turn my head a certain direction, and I thought it was just stress and tension. I thought that I just got migraines. After I started wearing the splint (as annoying as it may have been at first) my symptoms began to go away. Now I do not live off of Motrin and Bengay.

I came in with terrible daily headaches and jaw pain that just seemed to be getting worse to where I was waking up every morning and my jaw was hurting. I was uncomfortable almost all the time. Thanks to the splint my headaches are rare and my jaw no longer hurts at all.

For more than 20 years I have dealt with a variety of symptoms that in my thinking, were unrelated: headache on left side, ear fullness as if it were full of fluid, dizziness, jaw pain, shoulder pain, etc. After multiple doctor visits and ENT specialists I was diagnosed with TMJ but really offered no relief other than a mouthpiece to wear at night because of my severe teeth grinding. I have had jaw problems for years. Popping, trouble eating, biting into something, swallowing. One day I yawned and there was a pop in my jaw and a great deal of pain. I couldn't eat or even swallow liquids without severe pain. My G.P sent me to Dr U and he fit me with the splint. I was skeptical at first. This device is great. It works. I would recommend it to anyone who has TMJ.

One day I yawned and I felt my jaw pop out of place. I dealt with the pain of my jaw for about 3 months before I went to regular physician to find out what happened. The pain was so bad that I went to a soft diet. I would have tears when I ate or tried to yawn again. My physician sent me to have xrays and told me that I had TMJ. I have experienced TMJ symptoms for several years including jaw pain/popping, headaches in my temples and most recently (the last year or so) neck and shoulder pain. The pain was so severe it was affecting my everyday life and I would have to cut my foods into smaller pieces in order to eat without pain. I wore braces for a while which helped temporarily. The main symptom I had was the tightness in my facial muscles which I thought I could control by taking muscle relaxers. I have been treated for migraine headaches for 30 years by neurologist and internal medicine physicians. I believe the care I received from those physicians was appropriate based on the diagnosis of migraine headaches. However, when I developed TMJ dysfunction, my dentist referred me to Dr. Urbanek. Within 2 months of wearing my TMJ device my headaches disappeared. Now, after 6 months of wearing it, my TMJ dysfunction has resolved as well. Wow! What an amazing device that Dr. Urbanek has created! I went from having several headaches, jaw pain, next pain, teeth & mouth pain to very minimal to no pain after wearing this device for 10 weeks! My jaw no longer pops when i talk or eat. Everything went well. Appointments were on time if not early.

Was having clicking in jaw and lots of pain when jaw would lock. Had difficulty eating due to jaw pain. Googled jaw pain and Dr. Urbanek's website came up. Listened to tutorials about TMJ. Sent e-mail. Got called the next day and got appointment for TMJ splint. After 3 weeks pain was less after 9 weeks pain was gone.

I was referred by my dentist for TMJ pain. I can tell a significant difference when using the device. No more painful, loud "clicks" or locking of the jaw. Headaches and other symptoms have also significantly decreased.
